GASTON LITERACY COUNCIL
Transforming Lives Through Literacy in Gaston County
Literacy doesn't have an age-limit. Neither do we. From a seven-year-old increasing her confidence in reading to a father learning English, the GLC meets people at every point where reading can change a life.
WHO WE ARE
Free Educational Programs Designed for You.
Reading is the one skill that unlocks every other. In the early grades, children learn to read. As they grow, they rely on reading to learn everything else. It's how an adult earns a diploma, lands a better job, understands a doctor, or reads a bedtime story to their own child for the first time. When someone can't read - or can't read in the language of the community around them - every door gets a little heavier to open. For sixty years, the Gaston Literacy Council has been in the business of opening those doors for children and adults alike.
The best part? All of our instructional services are 100% FREE.
Take that first step toward a better job, greater independence, and a stronger community. Let's learn and grow together.
One Mission. Three Ways.

Reading Soul Mates
Reading Soul Mates pairs trained volunteers with local second-graders for weekly, one-on-one reading practice - helping children strengthen their reading skills before small challenges become lifelong barriers to learning.

ESL
English as a Second Language helps new and established neighbors build the English skills they need to work, parent, and fully belong in our community.
Adult Literacy
Adult Literacy meets adults who are ready to strengthen foundational reading and writing - the skills that open doors to employment, education, and independence.
Three programs, one belief: that no one in our community should be held back by what they were never given the chance to learn.
Three programs, one belief:
Literacy transforms lives.
